Picnic and Sunrock extend energy partnership

Amsterdam, 18th June, 2025
Sunrock continues to support Picnic in its sustainability strategy and is equipping its automated fulfilment center in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, with a rooftop solar system with a capacity of 1.6 MWp. Located in a highly congested part of the Dutch energy grid, the site will use 100% of the clean energy produced – covering around 30% of its local energy needs. This project marks the first realised installation under the broader European partnership of Sunrock and Picnic, with additional projects already in development to further enhance on-site energy independence for Picnic’s facilities.
Sunrock, a leading European developer of integrated renewable energy systems for logistics and industrial companies, and Picnic, the largest online supermarket in the Netherlands, have announced the deepening of their energy partnership. Sunrock will equip another Picnic property, the automated fulfilment center in Dordrecht, with a PV system. Construction began in the second quarter and is scheduled for completion in July 2025.
With an existing, operational project at the Berkel en Rodenrijs site, this is now the second project where Sunrock is providing renewable energy to Picnic in the Netherlands. In Germany, there are two active Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) with plants in Hamm in North Rhine-Westphalia and Berlin with a total volume of 4.3 MWp.

“Our mission at Picnic is to deliver groceries efficiently and sustainably. The solar PV project in Dordrecht is another important step in that ambition — helping us keep greenhouse gas emissions low while continuing to service the growing amount of customers,” explains Anna Krotova, Sustainability Lead at Picnic.

Solar power generated by the PV-system provides Picnic with a number of benefits supporting its commitment to sustainability. These include economic and organisational benefits such as lower electricity costs and reduced grid dependency. Innovative solutions for peak load reduction optimise the efficiency of the system and contribute to easing grid congestion at times of high electricity demands.

“For Picnic, this is an important step towards fulfilling its climate protection plan and ESG goals, enabling the company to reduce its CO2 emissions while meeting its energy needs,” says Karlijn Elias-Peters, Managing Director Netherlands at Sunrock. “We are proud to continue to support the company on its ambitious course and to create the conditions to consistently reduce its fossil footprint with our modern PV systems.”
