Saint-Caradec: A Self-Consumption Project to Produce and Share Local Electricity

  • 2.1 MWp of photovoltaic capacity installed on an existing building
  • 500 kWp made available to a tenant through individual self-consumption
  • Around 30% of the tenant’s electricity demand covered by solar energy
  • 2.4 MWp of additional photovoltaic capacity about to be commissioned
  • 4.5 MWp total photovoltaic capacity upon completion
  • A collective self-consumption scheme to share and locally valorise the energy produced

A logistics site transformed into a local energy hub

In Saint-Caradec, Brittany, Sunrock is supporting WDP in unlocking the energy potential of an existing logistics facility. The project is based on the deployment of a 2.1 MWp rooftop solar installation, combined with a self-consumption solution designed to directly meet part of the site’s energy needs.

This project demonstrates the potential of large logistics assets. Beyond their real estate function, buildings can become energy-generating assets capable of producing local, renewable and competitive electricity.

Solar energy directly consumed on site

Of the 2.1 MWp of installed photovoltaic capacity, 500 kWp has been made available to a tenant through an individual self-consumption arrangement.

The electricity generated is consumed directly on site and covers approximately 30% of the tenant’s electricity needs. This model helps reduce dependence on the grid, improve control over energy costs, and strengthen the site’s resilience to fluctuations in the electricity market.

Self-consumption also creates a direct link between the solar energy produced by the building and the activities carried out within it, promoting the use of locally generated energy. It is also an effective way to reduce the building’s carbon footprint.

A 2.4 MWp expansion to increase local renewable energy production

The project continues to grow, with plans to add 2.4 MWp of additional photovoltaic capacity.

This expansion will significantly increase renewable electricity generation and create new opportunities to make use of this energy both on site and within the surrounding local area.

Once completed, the total photovoltaic capacity associated with the project will reach 4.5 MWp, further strengthening the role of the Saint-Caradec site in the region’s energy production.

A model for competitiveness and resilience

The Saint-Caradec project demonstrates how logistics assets can play a key role in the energy transition.

By combining photovoltaic generation and individual self-consumption, Sunrock and WDP have transformed an existing rooftop into a powerful driver of energy performance.

This approach helps to:

  • Make long-term use of available roof space
  • Reduce dependence on conventional energy sources
  • Improve energy cost control
  • Support the decarbonisation of logistics operations
  • Develop renewable energy production close to end users
  • Strengthen the energy independence of both the site and the wider region

“Saint-Caradec demonstrates that a logistics site can become a true local energy hub. By combining individual and collective self-consumption, the project turns the rooftop into a lever for competitiveness and resilience.”
