Solar Power for BMW

Sunrock is set to install large-scale photovoltaic systems at two BMW Group plants in Eastern Bavaria, with a total capacity of 14 MWp. Starting from 2025, these systems will provide renewable, locally generated energy through a local Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), supporting the expansion of renewable energy supply at the automotive manufacturer’s sites.

Sunrock, Europe’s leading developer of photovoltaic systems for large-scale roofs, is equipping buildings at the BMW Group’s Dingolfing and Regensburg plants with PV systems. Once completed, the two sites will be supplied with climate-friendly, locally generated energy via a PPA from 2025 onwards. In total, Sunrock is developing 125,000 sqm of PV roof space for BMW, with a total capacity of 14 MWp, generating 14.2 GWh of electricity—enough to meet the needs of several thousand households. In Dingolfing, one of Germany’s most powerful PV systems, with a capacity of 11.1 MWp, will be installed on a central aftersales logistics building covering over 100,000 square metres, generating approximately 11.3 GWh of electricity annually. In Regensburg, 25,000 sqm of PV roof space with a capacity of 2.9 MWp will produce around 2.9 GWh. Sunrock leases the roof space at both locations.

Nicole Haft-Zboril, Head of BMW Group Real Estate Management, emphasises, “This project not only creates one of the largest rooftop photovoltaic installations in Germany. We are also directly advancing the renewable energy supply of BMW Group sites on the factory premises.”

Construction work on the projects will commence in the coming months, with commissioning of the facilities in Regensburg and Dingolfing planned for 2025. Through collaboration with Sunrock, the automotive manufacturer continues to expand its integration of renewable energies at its sites.

“The collaboration with a renowned automotive company like BMW is an accolade for us and a fantastic opportunity for our industry to demonstrate how we can jointly advance the energy transition. In a sector with high energy demand, similar to other industrial areas, it is crucial to develop local solutions for sustainable energy supply”, says Georg Brenninkmeijer, Managing Director of Sunrock Germany. “We look forward to soon starting the installation of the PV systems in Dingolfing and Regensburg, thus supplying two BMW Group plants with locally generated solar power. We take full responsibility for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the systems. With our approach to accompany our customers and partners over several decades, we create long-term planning security and contribute to the decarbonisation of the economy.”

In the summer of 2024, Sunrock announced that it would equip several plants of another international automotive group with PV systems.
