Sunrock Supplies Audi with Solar Energy

Duesseldorf, 29th July, 2025

After announcing in 2024 that it would equip sites of two international automotive groups with large-scale photovoltaic systems, Sunrock has now also installed PV systems at two Audi plants. With a combined capacity of over 2.6 MWp, these systems will provide the premium automobile manufacturer with locally generated, fossil-free energy, contributing to Audi’s sustainability goals. Both installations are scheduled to be commissioned later this year.

Sunrock, Europe’s leading developer of photovoltaic systems for large-scale rooftops, has installed PV systems with a total capacity of more than 2.6 MWp at two sites of premium automotive manufacturer AUDI AG. The system in Münchsmünster, Bavaria, has a capacity of 2.246 MWp, while the system in Ingolstadt, also in Bavaria, has a capacity of 0.384 MWp.

The PV systems, which support the automotive company’s sustainability goals, are expected to generate approximately 2,690 MWh of green electricity annually, enough to meet the yearly consumption of 1,277 single-person households. At the same time, they will save around 1,200 tons of CO₂ emissions each year. The installations contribute to meeting ESG standards and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In Münchsmünster, the solar power produced will directly supply the plant’s production processes. At Audi’s main site in Ingolstadt, the PV system was installed on a utility building and will provide solar energy for internal operations.

The project was implemented under an “operational lease” model: Sunrock remains the owner of the PV systems, while Audi leases them. Audi uses the electricity generated, while Sunrock handles operations and maintenance. As a full-service provider, Sunrock closely coordinated with the grid operator during the planning phase to assess grid capacity. The large-scale PV specialist also conducted structural and load-bearing assessments, yield and shading analyses, as well as grid connection and system integration. Sunrock is further responsible for testing system performance, compiling full documentation, and securing all necessary permits and certifications.

“The cooperation with Audi demonstrates how locally generated solar power can contribute to meeting ESG requirements even in energy-intensive industries. With every installed photovoltaic system, we pave the way for fossil-free industrial production. Audi shows how ambitious sustainability starts concretely on industrial rooftops. As a full-service provider, we manage every step of such projects – tailored to the specific requirements. We’re excited to bring these two installations into operation and to support Audi in achieving its sustainability goals,” says Tim Kayser, Regional Head of Development at Sunrock Germany.
