Enabling the electrification of truck fleets for Westerman Multimodal Logistics

At the distribution center of Westerman Multimodal Logistics in Nieuwleusen, a clear challenge emerged: how do you electrify your truck fleet in a region with limited grid capacity, without disrupting operations? And how can you achieve strong sustainability ambitions to further reduce emissions while complying with local regulations, such as Zero Emission Zones?

From ambition to an integrated solution

Together with Westerman, Sunrock developed an integrated energy and charging solution that enables the charging of electric trucks within the existing grid connection. By combining charging infrastructure, local energy generation and intelligent control, a fully integrated system was delivered that fulfills both Westerman’s operational needs and sustainability goals.

The solution includes two DC fast charging stations (360 kW) for electric trucks, an Energy Management System (EMS), and a rooftop solar installation with a capacity of 1.2 MWp. The EMS ensures that all energy flows, from generation to consumption, are continuously balanced, optimising the use of available capacity on site.

Future-ready and flexible by design

The system was also designed for future expansion. In a next phase, battery energy storage (BESS) can be added, allowing surplus solar energy to be stored and used later. This increases the flexibility of the system and provides additional opportunities to use available capacity more efficiently.

Impact for Westerman and the sector

With this approach, Westerman can charge electric trucks while operating within the limitations of the electricity grid. This makes it possible to even further decarbonise operations and expand the logistics business, despite local grid congestion. The project demonstrates how integrated energy systems play a key role in the broader energy transition towards electrification within logistics.

“We see from legislation, but also from customers, an increasing demand for electric transport […] this is definitely the future. Unfortunately, we have limited capacity, which forces us to look more broadly for other solutions. I think that Sunrock is unique in that they can manage all components and master the entire [energy] concept. This makes for a pleasant collaboration with Sunrock.” — Frank Hagenus, Facility Manager at Westerman Multimodal Logistics
