Capacity of around 23 MWp for 17 building roofs
The total capacity to be installed over the next two years comprises around 23 MWp at the sites in Rastatt, Kuppenheim, Sindelfingen, Kamenz, Untertürkheim, Bremen and Kölleda. Installation of the first systems in Rastatt and Sindelfingen began at the end of 2023. Solar panels manufactured in Germany by Meyer Burger, an industrial manufacturer of solar cells and solar modules based in Gwatt (Thun), Switzerland, will be used for one system in Kuppenheim.
After completion, the sites will be supplied with locally and sustainably generated electricity on the roof via a local Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). Sunrock is thus supporting the car manufacturer in implementing its plans to expand renewable energy at its own production sites in Germany.
“The goal for all Mercedes-Benz production facilities worldwide is to run on 100 percent renewable energy by 2039. The expansion of photovoltaic systems plays an important role in this. By turning our own production sites into production sites for renewable energies, we are making an active contribution to the energy transition in Germany,” says Arno van der Merwe, Vice President Production Planning at Mercedes-Benz AG.
Sunrock continues to expand
“We are delighted to support the sustainable business strategy of one of the world’s leading automotive companies. In future, Mercedes-Benz AG locations in Germany will receive locally generated solar power from their own roofs. We are grateful for the excellent cooperation and are pressing ahead with the installation of further PV systems,” says Georg Brenninkmeijer, Managing Director Sunrock Germany.
