As Sunrock’s Head of Legal in France, Christian Mouchel puts the law at the service of innovation and the development of integrated energy solutions tailored to the needs of businesses and local communities. We spoke to him to find out more.
To start with, can you tell us about your background before joining Sunrock?
The transition happened quite naturally. Today, real estate and energy are closely connected: buildings are no longer just places that consume energy. They are becoming spaces that produce, store and manage it.
After working in real estate and proptech, contributing to this transformation felt like the logical next step. When I discovered Sunrock, its mission and positioning immediately resonated with my background.
Solar energy on large rooftops, especially logistics facilities, is a practical solution for building a more decarbonised energy future. Joining Sunrock gave me the opportunity to contribute directly to that mission.
What is your role at Sunrock France today?
I see it as a dual role: facilitator and guardian.
A facilitator, because the company needs support when exploring new legal territory or developing business models that do not yet have ready-made answers. The law should not only set boundaries; it should also create opportunities.
A guardian, because it is important to manage risks and give the business a clear understanding of legal issues so decisions can be made with full awareness.
The two go hand in hand: helping the company move forward without compromising its foundations.
What does a typical day in your role look like?
There is no typical day, and that is exactly what I enjoy.
Being part of the launch of Sunrock’s French operations immediately appealed to me. There is still so much to build, structure, and sometimes even invent. Every project brings its own questions.
The team has a real pioneering mindset. We operate in a fast-growing market with the belief that many opportunities still need to be created. As a result, no two days are ever the same.
What sets Sunrock apart from other players in the market?
First and foremost, its pioneering spirit and its strong focus on customer needs.
The market is evolving quickly. Expectations are changing and require more flexible solutions. Installing photovoltaic systems on rooftops is no longer enough.
Today, we must think about self-consumption, battery storage, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and smart energy management. Other solutions that we may not even be imagining yet will further enrich these models.
Sunrock stands out through its ability to adapt, design tailored solutions and explore paths that others have not yet taken. Innovation is not an end in itself. It has to address real needs and create value for customers.
Is there a project you are particularly proud of?
Every project I have worked on has included an element of innovation. But if I had to choose one, it would be the launch of our collective self-consumption (ACC) offering, developed from a blank sheet of paper.
Collective self-consumption brings electricity production and consumption closer together. It supports local, renewable, and competitive energy while creating local energy ecosystems that benefit businesses, public stakeholders and communities.
Building and deploying this offering required a great deal of work, but it has been a rewarding collective achievement.
This model directly addresses the challenges of the energy transition. As electricity demand continues to grow, we need to diversify the energy mix and better connect generation sites with local needs.
Seeing this offering come to life in the field today is one of my greatest professional satisfactions!
What personally motivates you in your work?
It all started with a simple question one of my daughters once asked me: “Dad, is green good for the planet?”
In an attempt to answer that question, I wrote a book about the roots of climate change. Through that work, I came to understand the central role of the energy sector in greenhouse gas emissions and the scale of the transformation that is required.
We need to rethink both the energy sources we use and the way we produce, distribute and consume energy.
Solar power on large logistics rooftops is one of the practical solutions already available to us. Being involved in these projects allows me to use my expertise to support meaningful change and deliver visible results
Which developments in the energy sector do you find most promising?
Managing the intermittency of renewable energy is probably the most promising area. Solar energy is generated during certain hours of the day, while electricity demand follows a different pattern. At night, for example, solar panels stop producing, but demand continues.
Storage is therefore an essential step, allowing part of the energy generated to be captured and released when needed. But storage alone is not enough.
We also need systems that can manage energy flows, anticipate needs, and balance generation, storage, and consumption.
This is likely to be one of the next major milestones of the energy transition, and it is an area where Sunrock has an important role to play by continuing to explore new models and turning technological advances into practical solutions for customers.
