Logistics distribution centre now ready for electrification
Amsterdam, 16 July 2026 – European sustainable energy solutions specialist Sunrock has equipped Welkoop’s distribution centre in Apeldoorn with integrated energy infrastructure. Welkoop, the tenant of the distribution centre and a retailer for gardening, pets and outdoor living, can now electrify its logistics operations thanks to this future-proof energy solution.

The energy solution consists of a PV system generating 2,274 megawatt-hours annually, equivalent to the electricity consumption of approximately 900 households. The infrastructure also includes a battery with a power capacity of 300 kilowatts and a storage capacity of 699 kilowatt-hours. In addition, the distribution centre has been equipped with twelve charging stations, allowing up to 24 vehicles to charge simultaneously. The management and optimisation of the energy infrastructure is carried out through software, also known as an Energy Management System (EMS). The solution enables Welkoop to meet its increasing electricity demand and electrify its logistics operations despite the grid congestion challenges in the Netherlands, where available grid capacity for electricity transport is extremely limited.
Locally generated, locally consumed
The electricity generated at the distribution centre in Apeldoorn is consumed or stored on site. The battery storage system will enable operator Welkoop to reduce peak loads on the grid when needed by storing energy when solar production exceeds consumption, and supplying energy when consumption is higher than generation. The smart charging infrastructure has been designed so that charging power can be adjusted, ensuring the distribution centre remains within its contracted grid capacity.
“With this project, we are demonstrating how logistics companies can continue electrifying their operations despite grid congestion,” says Karlijn Elias-Peters, Managing Director of Sunrock Netherlands. “By intelligently combining energy generation, storage and charging, we make sustainable logistics possible. The expertise we are building with integrated energy systems in the Netherlands is helping us deliver similar solutions for customers across Europe.”
Casper Meijer, CEO of Welkoop, adds: “We are pleased that Sunrock has delivered this solution. It makes our operations more future-proof and gives us the opportunity to further improve sustainability and continue innovating.”
