Sunrock supplies Thalia’s omni-channel hub in Marl with local and clean energy

A photovoltaic system with a capacity of 3.24 MWp was commissioned in April at Thalia’s omni-channel hub in Marl, North Rhine-Westphalia. The energy generated on site is provided by Sunrock to the omni-channel bookseller under a Local Power Purchase Agreement (LPPA).

Sunrock, a leading European developer of large-scale rooftop solar and integrated clean energy solutions, commissioned the photovoltaic system at Thalia’s omni-channel hub in Marl, North Rhine-Westphalia, in April 2026 and has since been supplying the bookseller with locally generated solar power under a Local Power Purchase Agreement (LPPA). The new system was constructed within around 8 months and has a capacity of 3.24 MWp. With an annual electricity production of approximately 2,960 Mwh, which corresponds to an annual electricity consumption of around 1,400 single-person households, it enables savings of around 1,317 tonnes of CO per year. The majority of the electricity produced – around 65%₂ – is purchased by Thalia. This allows approximately 23.5% of the omni-channel hub’s total electricity demand to be covered by solar power.

“The local energy supply was a relevant factor in the realisation of our new site in Marl. Through the collaboration with Sunrock, sustainable energy is generated directly on site, which we can use for our own needs. This not only strengthens our security of supply, but at the same time creates economic advantages through long-term stable and predictable energy costs,” comments Julian Freimuth, Technical Director of the Thalia omni-channel hub.

Combining innovation and sustainability

The new omni-channel hub was developed by ParkProperty Europe (formerly ECE Work & Live) and covers around 56,000 m². Both in development and in ongoing operation, the responsible use of resources is a key focus. The building was constructed to the Energy Efficiency House 40 standard. Heating is provided by an efficient heat pump and operates entirely without fossil fuels. In addition to the photovoltaic system from Sunrock, the property features a green roof area as well as numerous electric charging points for cars and bicycles. A comprehensive biodiversity concept has also been implemented, including nesting aids and the creation of wildflower meadows. Certification according to the DGNB Gold standard (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen) is being pursued.

“With the omni-channel hub for Thalia, we have created a modern, sustainable, and futureproof site that meets high tenant requirements and strengthens the structural transformation in the region. From the outset, our goal was to consistently combine economic efficiency with sustainable construction and operation. The generation of local electricity through the photovoltaic system implemented by our partner Sunrock is an important component of a sustainable and economically viable energy mix,” says Serkan Aydemir, Director Industrial at ParkProperty Europe

Georg Brenninkmeijer, Managing Director at Sunrock Germany, adds: “We are pleased to be able to commission the photovoltaic system at the Thalia omni-channel hub in Marl. As a full-service partner for PV systems, LPPAs and further integrated solutions, we support our customers holistically, both the property owner as well as the tenant, from planning through implementation to long-term operation. In doing so, we jointly develop solutions that not only convince today but also create long-term added value. Close and trusting collaboration with all project stakeholders is a key success factor. In this way, we create the foundation for integrated energy solutions that meet ecological and economic requirements alike.”
